Chimney & Fireplaces/chimney crack - bricks

Question
We just bought a cottage built in 1954.  There is a large crack (about 5 feet) from the top of the chimney to the roof line.  The previous owner told us the chimney was struck by lightning.  The mason that looked at it said he could re-build just the top part of the chimney where the crack is, but the new bricks would not match.  I understand that there are companies that sell old bricks.  If old bricks can be re-used, why can't he carefully de-construct our chimney and re-use the bricks so they match? (the cracked bricks that need to be replaced can be replaced with new bricks on the roof side of the chimney that no one would see.)  Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks.

Hi Laureen,

What you're suggesting is potentially possible, but dependent on many things including the condition of the existing bricks.

You'll have to consult with your contractor to have him explain why he can't do this.
