Question
I am considering purchasing either a coal stove insert or a hearth coal stove.  Our home has an existing zero clearance wood fireplace and I would like to vent the coal stove using the existing chimney.  

Can I use the existing chimney to vent the stove?  Do I need to re-line the chimney?  Do you know of any fire code that prohibits the installation of a coal stove insert into a zero clearance fireplace?

You definitely can not install an insert inside of a factory built fireplace and chimney unless the two are specifically tested together and listed as compatible. These examples are few and far between, be certain to check with both manufactures and your building department before proceeding. Good luck.
