Question
I have a house built in 2004 that has one of those pre-fab open front firebox fireplaces. It is ridiculously inefficient as all the heat goes up the chimney. It has a gravity damper (not sure if thats relevant.) I want to convert this to a wood-burning stove with doors and blowerrs to become the primary source for heating my small house. Is there a woodburner to insert in the prefab box or will I have to rip out the old woodburing fireplace?

You will have to remove and replace the existing fireplace and chimney system. You will want to replace with a high efficiency fireplace and there are several good ones to choose from. Don't let anyone talk you into installing an insert within your existing system. If the two listed units haven't been test together, and they haven't, it voids the listing of both units and may lead to bad things happening. Good luck.
