Question
My husband and I are going to buy our first home, we are still waiting for the house inspector to come, but I thought I would ask you this question first...I noticed black soot on the exterior siding and vent where the gas stove is located. Is this a huge concern (natural gas is supposed to be very clean)and is it a safety issue, who do I get to clean it or fix it? I hope you can help me with this..and thank you in advance.

Congratulations on the purchase of your first home. Please use the links at the bottom of my home page at www.brooks-hearth.com to find a fireplace inspector near you, that performs the NFPA-211 level II inspection required at the sale or transfer of property. You are right to be concerned with the safety of any hearth appliance. Like most things, they don't operate free from defect for ever. It sound like a service is required at the very least. Certainly the level II inspection will flush this out. Good luck.
