Chimney & Fireplaces/steel firebox - needs new blower system

Question

Fireplace vents
In our cottage we have a masonry fireplace with a steel firebox that appears to have been original, circa 1940. There are four vents built into the wall, two at the floor and two at about six feet high. We trashed the old blower system years ago and converted this fireplace to gas, but with propane prices so high I want to go back to wood. What type of blower system and glass screen is most appropriate to take advantage of this original system, including the integrated wall vents/ Thanks.

Answer
Hello Kurt, What you are describing is called a Heatolator and with a unit that old you will never find part. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have. if the unit is still in good working order you might be able to find a couple of small fans (installed my a licensed Electrician) to help blow air in the base vents and out the top. or place fans in front of these vents and regular masonry glass doors (home Depot/Lowes) should fit just get the measurement right.
hope this helped
