Question

Fireplace Design
Sir,

I am building a fireplace in India. Would appreciate your help. The opening width is 36". Flue size is 12X12. Can I reduce it to 9X12 or 9X16? There is a bedroom on top and I dont want to reduce its width by more than 9".

Praveen,

Take your fireplace width of 36" inches and multiply that times the the height of the opening. The overall area of your flue should be no less than 1/10th of that size. The 9 X 12 would give you a flue area of 108 square inches. Given your width of 36" inches on the fireplace, the height could be 24" - 26" inch and comply with that.
