Question
We just bought a house that had a brick wall/ fireplace added after the fact.  There is about an 8 inch space between the brick wall and the original house wall (exterior wall).  It is a gas-log fireplace.  One end of the cavity is completely open.  Would it be worth anything to insulate that space? Is it safe? Pointless? Also, I hate have a huge red brick wall, if you know of any websites that talk about making over such a thing please point me in their direction.  Thanks!!

This is a question that would require a site visit by a trained professional.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site inspection of this situation.  They can then advise you a to a proper course of action, if any.
