Chimney & Fireplaces/Replacing the top of a zero clearance fireplace

Question
Can you safely remove and replace the entire top section of a zero clearance fireplace without removing the entire fire box? Our damper has rusted open and a contractor we contacted to repair it, says the he can remove the top on the unit and replace it from the inside of the house without removing the existing heart walls. Will this repair be safe?

Answer
Hello Bill, with out seeing it I can not say for sure, but I do not think so.
you may be able to install a top mount damper but check with the manufacturer of the fireplace.
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have.
