Question
Hi, I have an open fire with no damper, which I do use every week or so. I'm trying to work out what's the best way to prevent heat loss up the chimney when I'm not using the fireplace. As far as I can see there are three options - a fireplace damper, a chimney top damper or fire doors. The  fire doors sound like a good option in that they don't require any maintenance. Based on your experience what's the best option or even options?

The top sealing dampers work well and good one can stop 100% of heat loss. The only issue is that you cant close it until the fire has completely cooled off. The doors you can close as the fire dies down, but are hardly an air tight seal. Maybe a combination of both? Good luck.
