Question
I have just bought a house and have ripped out the old coal fire.. and i am installing an electric fire and hearth..do i need to put a capping of some sort on the chimney to stop water or condensation?? many thanks

Answer
Hello Matty, if there is not exhaust going into he flue then you can cover the top with a metal plate and silicone it in place. If there is any exhaust at all from burning any thing like gas, propane, oil or wood it must remain open.
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have.
