Chimney & Fireplaces/chimney lining

Question
Hey, James.  I'm having my old oil burner and oil tank removed to install natural gas in my home.  I'm told from the gas company that I need to have the chimney re-lined.  I haven't used the chimney in well over 30 years so it probably does need the work.  I'm told from one chimney company that it would cost $2,500 to re-lined the chimney. Does that price sound right to you or should I spend more time to get additional quotes?  Thank you!

Answer
Hello Joy, there are many reasons for the need to reline a flue. sizing, deterioration, and depending on the installations, and what needs to be done to get the liner in to the chimney. You could have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to get you a second opinion and price.
any exterior chimney that is relined for natural gas must be insulated.
