how do i close the flue on the inside of the fireplace/

Hello Mary, I believe you are asking how to close the "damper", look up inside the firebox (watch you don't hit any thing and get it in your eyes or wear safety goggles)there you should see a handle, you have to look at it to see how it works (some pivot, some ratchet with teeth knotches) as you are looking up at the handle move it slowly, the damper should tip front to back on top not the bottom.
you can also call a local certified chimney sweep (www.csia.org) to show you how to use it and give it a good inspection.
