Question
The lower half of my bylevel has a corner fireplace it shares one outside wall & one garage wall, which tends to be the coldest part of the room.  After a below zero period, I notice about a two stud section that was covered with snow christals on the garage wall board side direcly behind where the fireplace is.  I made a small hole and could see no insulation behind the studs.  Was this a mistake by the builder, what should I see for insulation?  I converted it to a gas log set up, but still don't use it as the room is just too cold in the winter.

You would have to check with your local building code, but I would certainly think that that wall should be a fire wall as it is a garage. Have your fireplace inspected by a qualified fireplace inspector and see if they can offer any solutions to your heating issues.
