Chimney & Fireplaces/flue routing

Question
Bart,
I live in WA state.  I have an older Lopi Patriot freestanding stove with exhaust flue that exits the stove vertically, penetrates the wall after a 90 degree bend (2-45s) then it 90's up again inside the wood framed chimney outside the wall and up to the top.  Everything works fine but I want to replace the old Lopi with a newer more efficient one and also would like to move the location 5 feet to the corner of the room.  This would put the new stove out of alignment with the existing chimney and flue location.  The question is whether it is okay to have a horizontal run of the stove pipe after it exits the wall to outside of the wall of the house to get back into the chimney box/flue location?  As I picture it, the flue would have 3-90's after exiting the stove.  I know that the ideal situation is to minimize bends but can this kind of offset installation be done safely?

Answer
Hi Keith,

You shouldn't have 4 - 90 degree elbows in any system.

I would not recommend doing what you're contemplating.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site advisement on moving the stove.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

If you  don't have a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep in your area, I recommend you contact a local NFI Certified Wood Specialist to do some on-site advisement on moving the stove.

You can find a NFI Certified Wood Specialist at www.nficertified.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
