Chimney & Fireplaces/"key" to operate damper

Question
I have an odd damper assembly--was installed sometime in the mid-70s when the chimney was built.  The damper is opened and closed with a coarse screw thread, operated by a 1/4" square shank inside a tube that leads through the fireplace face, just above the opening.  The previous owner lost the key or crank or whatever was used to operate the screw, and I have to reach inside the firebox and turn the screw by hand.  I've called all the local fireplace shops and even tried to find a large clock key that would work.  No luck.  No name on the assembly either.  Suggestions as to where I can find the proper key or crank or whatever operates this damper?

Thanks.
Mike

Answer
Hello Mike, Try a door knob the older type (I have used the glass door knobs) they still sell them in the hardware stores. they have a set screw, that is the most important part you will need to tighten this screw. also ask at the hardware store for other things that might work, window opening handle...etc
keep me posted
