Chimney & Fireplaces/small crack in prefab chimney back wall

Question
We had our entire fireplace and chimney replaced in February 2008.  We noticed yesterday, January 2009, a small crack in the prefab back wall of the chimney.  It is about 8 inches long.  Is it still safe to use the fireplace?  Is this something that should happen to a new unit that is less than 1 year old and only used about 20 times since it was installed?  Is this something that a lay person could fix or should we contact the contractor that installed the unit?
Thank you so much
Jeannette

Answer
I would contact the fireplace manufacturer about that crack (it might be covered by the warranty) it might have been installed incorrectly, or hit while loading wood or a to hot fire.
to replace it speak to them or contact a certified chimney sweep (WWW.CSIA.ORG) you can search 50 radius for your zip code
