Why does smoke come out of my chimney when there is no fire burning?

Hello Diane, is this chimney connected to another unit? like an other home (condo) or an oil fired unit? if so then you are getting Negative Pressure, Either way it is very dangerous,  I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.keep me posted
