I have a fireplace that was built in the 1980s.  How much effort is it to convert it to a Rumford style and is it something that can be handled by most masons?

Hi Bill,

It is a lot of effort, but it is worthwhile.  A Rumford will vent with less air being exhausted from the home, therefore, less conditioned air is being lost.

The fire view from a Rumford is typically stunning compared to the typical "black hole" fireplace see today.

Most masons don't know how to do this as they don't really understand the hydraulic flow theory that makes fireplaces work well.  Many chimney sweeps know how Rumfordize an existing fireplace!
