Question

gas valve
I bought a house earlier this year with a wood burning fireplace.  Just inside the front right corner of the fireplace (right inside the glass) is a gas valve connected to a half inch gas line.  Several people have told me this is for a log lighter.  I went to a fireplace store and they told me in addition to the log lighter, I have to buy a "dante" valve. They could not explain why this is a better type of valve.  Two questions: 1) Do I have to have a Dante valve, or is the type I have just as good (see picture); 2)Is it ok that this valve is inside the glass?  I talked to a gas guy over the phone and he said this should be ok, but I'd like to confirm.

Answer
Hello Jeremy, I do not install or deal with gas installs but you are dealing with gas in your home and the knob looks like plastic? wouldn't that melt? if they are going to install that "dante valve" then they would be reasonable for that installation, if you follow the "gas Guy" do you really want to take a "should be ok" chance with your family and home?
replace it
