Chimney & Fireplaces - Blocking off (sealing) an unused wood fireplace

Expert: Steve Tavares - 11/2/2009

Question
Hi,

We have an unused wood burning fireplace that I would like to block off to reduce heat loss.  It has an old damper (1920's house)that doesn't close very well.

I would like to know if it is ok to close the bottom opening with some rigid styrofoam insulation or other material.  I have heard there may be a problem with moisture build up if it is sealed?

Thanks, appreciate your advice.

Answer
Personally I would suggest putting insulation in the chimney to stop air from coming in. Then if you need to cover the bottom panels do so. Just remember that if you want to have a fire at any time that you will need to remove what you put there.

Hope this helps.
