Question
I used to burn wood in my fireplace. Now I want to switch to gas logs. The back and hearth refractory shows what looks like it has chipped in spots. Is there a way to seal/repair this? If not, is it difficult to replace the back and hearth refractory?

Answer
Hello Ron, it sounds like you have a Pre Fab fireplace and if so you much be sure they allow gas logs to be burnt by checking with them or the owners manual, you should also be able to get the replacement panels from them, if they are still in business.
They do make a generic replacement panel but should only be installed by certified sweeps and know they are not OEM  (csia.org)
