Chimney & Fireplaces/Old Gas Fireplace

Question

Old Gas Fireplace burn
I have a very old gas fireplace in the house I just moved into. It has a gas lead coming from the basement into the fireplace that connects to a gas pipe that then connects to and old, old burner. The fireplace was covered in "fill" that was very old, and looked like soot more than fill. I've cleaned that out and noticed there was sand under the burner. This is a very old fireplace. Do I need to replace the sand for some odd reason? And must I have fill in an old gas fireplace? What is it's purpose other than asthetics? Thank you.

Answer
It looks like what is there now is the way it is supposed to be. Some logsets actually have sand under the burner (Sandpan Logset is what we call them). I would find out who made this and try to get the manual from them to see what exactly needs to be there.

If there is any other info i can help provide let me know.
