Chimney & Fireplaces/gas insert insulation

Question
I have a 6000 series Heat&Glo insert that has cold air coming in around the sides or through the rocks. It has a [dog house] type wall behind it.What type of insulation would you recommend behind the insert, presently there is none. I have the insert out of the wall and full access right now. Thanks Mike

Answer
You should insulate and vapor barrier the inside of that dog house. The type of Insulation is up to you. I would go with a higher R rating just because I prefer better insulation. Then you need to make sure that once the insulation and vapor barrier is up to sheet the inside before the fireplace goes back in.

Hope this helps.
