Chimney & Fireplaces - smoke problem

Expert: James Ball - 11/4/2009

Question
Hello James
I have a question. I have a fireplace for closed to 10 years. It had inside a blade damper instaled right above so I was able to closed and open directly from outside the fireplace. The only problem I had was with smoke[you prbobly know already] on the cold days because I had to worm up th whole chimney. Previousle I call one of the chimney company  and I asked them to clean a chimney as well I mention the above problem. So as always everyone will say o it is no problem we will insatll a new dumper energy efficient etc.. So they did and since they instaled on the top of the cimney; opens up and down. I'm having a problem with smoke when I have colsed door everything is fine, but ones i open door to put more wood[i did try very slowly] I do see smoke drfting on the upsatairs you do smell very badly smoke. Please tell mw what would you suggest I should do. When I had old dlade dumper I had no problem with opening a door only again on the cold days with strat a fire and then no problem.
Thank James
Joseph

Answer
Hello Joe, it is called Negative pressure, you have changed the chimney with the different top mount damper do try building your fire/grate up on a few bricks, and maybe cracking a door or window before you open the doors and close the door/window after you load your wood.
James
