Chimney & Fireplaces/venting a wood burner

Question
I have an open fireplace in the basement and am putting a free standing wood furnace in front of it. Question is, what is the best method to vent the flu pipe from the wood burner into the fireplace? How do I seal the fireplace to prevent leakage and have the correct draft.   Thank you.

Hi Rich,

You need to install a full-length, insulated, UL-listed stainless steel chimney lining system from the stove to the top of the chimney.

You should NOT just dump the exhaust into the fireplace opening or into the smoke chamber as this will create many problems including draft issues, massive creosote accumulation and a maintenance nightmare.

After this is completed, you can install a simple sheet metal piece inside the fireplace as a trim piece.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some an on-site visit to examine your proposed installation.
