Chimney & Fireplaces/water coming through chimney

Question
hi

we recently bought a house, its around 10 yrs old. brick build. recently we notice water coming through the chimney when its raining badly. we are thinking of "seal" the chimney as we don't use the fire place. i wonder how bigger a job it is to seal a chimney? assuming there is no damp.

many thanks
jin yen

Answer
Hello Jin, do you have a cap? maybe a top mount damper it will seal the top of the chimney and has a cable that runs down the inside of the chimney to open and close. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
