Chimney & Fireplaces/Smoke is released when glass door opens

Question
Hello,
I have a "Heatilator" fireplace that was built in 1987. When I open the glass door(s) smoke comes out the top of the doors. I have to quickly open and close door when feeding the fire. I want to install an insert but do not have the money now. The existing chimney is about 3 feet tall from tile roof. Would adding an extension on the chimney stop the smoke from the doors? What else can I do?

Answer
Steve try opening a door or window before you open the glass doors see if that helps, if so then you have a "negative pressure" issue that is hot air raising in the house pulling air and smoke down the chimney, stop it from getting out the top of the house and you will be fine.
