Chimney & Fireplaces/Smoke shelf

Question
Hey James,  Before I install a new damper in my woodburnv4ing FP should I fill in behind the firebox?  There is alot of space back there and I've noticed from pictures I've seen that it should be like a proper shelf.  If it should be filled in, what materials should I use?  I have some bags of concrete I could use.  What do you think?  Thanks,  Tim

Answer
Hello Tim, not sure what you have there, you might not need to do any thing, I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
