Chimney & Fireplaces/Wood burning Fireplace Insert

Question
I would like to buy a fireplace insert but the front of the fireplace has a raised brick design. The cover plate of the insert will be about 1 inch out from the brick. The opening will be along both sides. I am going to have a chimney sweep clean first and then install the insert. Is there a special type of insulation that can be used to eliminate the open space and drafts? Or is it better to cut the brick design out so it can lay flush again the wall?

Answer
Hello Robert, you must follow the installation instructions of the insert, if the design of the fireplace "sticks out" I would not alter it.
as far as "open space and drafts" the insert should be lined to the top and insulated. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
