Question
I am wanting to remove an existing brick fireplace hearth.  Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do in an attempt to see what is under the brick?  For instance, if it is concrete - blocks, etc...  Thanks.

If you have a raised foundation, you can crawl underneath and look, If its a slab foundation, you should have concrete. If its on a second floor, you wont know until you dig it up. There should be at least 4" inches of non combustible material at any heart extension, particularly the one you will replace with. Best of luck and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
