Question
We have a 10" gas "lighter" for our wood burning fireplace. this is the piece where the holes are that let the gas out. the entire lighter used to light. recently, only the half closest to the gas source will light. we have vacuumed it and pushed a wire thru the holes on both sides of the pipe. still only half of it gets gas. we have turned the gas up as far as it will go. no clogs seems apparent.
thoughts?

Answer
Barb,

Your log lighter has fireplace ash inside that is causing an obstruction. You can remove the pipe and tap it with a hammer and watch all of the ash fall out, or you can replace it for a modest amount and either way, it will work fine. Natural gas condensates moisture and ash falls through the open holes. together the moisture and ash can harden and create this blockage. Good luck and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
