Question
I'm looking for the math formula to determine proper height of a chimney for a fire box that is 42w"x49t"x27d". This is an outdoor chimney attached to a screened-in porch.

Sorry for the late reply, I taught I had answered this a few days ago. Chimney height is not determined by the size of firebox opening. The flue size should be no less than 1/10th the area of the firebox opening, but the height must be at least three feet above the roof it penetrates and two feet taller than anything within ten feet horizontal from the chimney. You may find that on a screen porch,you have issues with a prevailing wind that could lead to smoke entry as well. Hope this helps and good luck.
