i rent in so. california. have been in this apt 3 years and have never gotten the
chimney swept. is that something the rental property  management pays for or
do i have to pay out of pocket?

Hello Desiree, did you ask them? they might, if not have it done. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
