Question

Chimney
Attached are a few pictures of a chimney needing repair.  The house has no fireplaces and the chimney is used only for appliance venting.  We are planning on relining, but upon further inspection we found that the masonry above the roofline is shot.  My plan is to remove the masonry to just above the roofline, add a liner, install a 3' prefab pipe w/cap to meet code height, and finally add a mortar cap around the new pipe at the top of the existing chimney. Does this sound ok? Or would I be better off rebuilding the existing masonry and then adding a cap? Also how do I know what size pipe to reline with?

Hi Scott,

You should be able to tear the chimney down below the roofline, add the liner and the 3' b-vent, re-deck, re-roof and re-flash.

You'll have to consult the NFPA 54 tables to determine the size of liner you need.  That is dependent on many factors including btu input, length of run, connector type and size, etc...
