Question
We are planning on putting tile over our existing ugly brick fireplace.  I want to totally get rid of the existing heatilator vents that are now in the fireplace by just placing tile over it.  My hustband feels this could be a fire hazard.  Would it be a problem to just tile over the vents, or is there another safe way to get rid of these unsightly heatilator vents?  Thanks so much!  Sybil Chamberlain

Hi Sybil,

You shouldn't just cover those vents or a dangerous heat-buildup could occur.  Your husband is correct, it would be a potential fire hazard.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your situation and let you know exactly what might be done with that particular fireplace.
