Is a lower damper and a smoke shelf required if I install a top mount damper with the long chain operation?
Hello Denny, If you install a top damper then no you do not need the original damper, do not alter the smoke shelf. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
