I have a very similar unit that I have been using regularly for  nearly 30 years.  My fire brick is cracked from years of hot fires  so I simply purchased grout in a caulking tube and fixed it.  Love the fireplace the unit radiates heat and keeps it cozy, no need to turn on the forced air!

We had a similar situation with a free standing, wood burning, fireplace/stove/heater.  After looking at several dozen photos on the www it was identified as a Fire Drum. Also Malm Fire Drum. Ours looked similar to your; but maybe about 10 years older.  We loved it, it heated the small house perfectly.  In Texas not many of us know how to bank a fire at night so all you have to do in the morning is throw another log on....   These things are wonderful.  I have seen several of this type where the vent pipe had an outer, decorative cover; with the actual vent pipe inside that.  Hard to imagine anyone installing one that way if there isn't a "but..." in there somewhere.
