Chimney & Fireplaces/replacing liner

Question
We are having our clay chimney liner replaced due to a chimney fire in January. The guy doing the work comes highly recommended by people we know.
He just told my husband that he can not get 2/3 of the clay liner out because it is mortared in. That he will still put in a new stainless steel liner, but it will just be a little smaller and it will go inside the clay liner.
Does this sound right/possible?

Hi Tanya,

As long as the liner can be still be insulated as per the manufacturer's requirements and it still provides the minimum cross-sectional area required for the appliance, this can be done.

Ask your installer to show you the details on these two items before you agree to this.  A stainless steel liner typically should not be installed without insulation.

If he was originally planning to reline with tile, I would question his credentials.
