Chimney & Fireplaces/Attaching mantel to real fieldstone fireplace

Question
I have an asymmetrical, floor to ceiling, fieldstone fireplace in my mid century modern home and would like to attach a simple wooden box that would compliment our floating stairway. I would also like to be able to use this mantel for a 42" flat screen television and would hide all of the wiring within the box. Any ideas about how to attach something like this to the rock or mortar? What kind of anchors could I use?

Answer
Hello Mary, 1st I am not a big fan of TV's over fireplace's (heat) 2nd make sure the mantel is 12" above the opening and 6" on both sides (minimum clearance to combustibles) Then maybe leave room behind the frame of the mantel (to house a 2 x 4 sub frame) and then anchor the 2 x 4 to the stone work with masonry anchors and then screw the mantel to the 2 x 4's? Or you could hire a contractor.
