Chimney & Fireplaces/Conversion of masonry fireplace to alcove

Question
Hi James,
I have a standard masonry fireplace that has a wood stove insert installed.  The chimney backs up to my garage, and I seem to lose most of my heat up the flue and into the garage. I would like to convert my firebox area into an alcove by keeping the fireplace opening the same, but raising the opening by about 3 feet. Then I can install a free standing stove into the opening.  Are there any plans that show the best way of doing this?  My main concern is supporting the top of the opening while getting some steel support installed.

Thanks,

Answer
Hello Brandon, is the insert installed correctly? is it being operated properly? check with the manufacturer to find out why you are not getting the heat out you should.
as far as changing the fireplace opening to fit a bigger wood stove might cost more than just finding a stove/insert that works and fits.
You could have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they might be able to help.
