Chimney & Fireplaces/Fire Brick inserts

Question
We purchased a cabin NE Georgia last year. The fireplace is a built in prefab unit. The back wall fire brick insert is cracked and I noticed the last time we cleaned it a couple quarter size pieces have fallen out exposing the metal behind. One can I purchase new ones? Two is it safe to use the way it is until its fixed?

Answer
Hello James, it sounds like you have a Pre Fab fireplace and the back panel has holes and cracks with out seeing it I would say "no do  not use it" until it is fixed.
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
