Chimney & Fireplaces/chimney with woodstove

Question
Hi there! We are looking at buying an old antique cape, and there is currently a large chimney with a woodstove hooked up to it- not a big fan of wood stoves and I would prefer a wood burning fireplace. Is it possible to make the hearth into a fireplace?
It is large in width but not super large in depth and is located right in the center of the room- exposing brick on both sides. Thanks so much!
