Question
We bought a house with model MRC42A. When ever we light a fire we get smoke inside our home. Our chimney is high enough. There is a slanted black piece of metal that the vent handle slides back and forth in,that seems to trap the smoke and will not let it go up the chimney. The smoke seems to gather there and comes out into our home, when we first start a fire and as we're adding wood to an already lit fire. Could the slanr of this piece of metal be put on backwards?? Hi Terry,
There are numerous issues that could be causing this smoking issue, but it's fairly unlikely that the damper on a factory-built fireplace is installed backwards.
Make sure the damper is ALL the way open. On some fireplaces it can open just a little and cause smoking. If it is the one I'm thinking you have, the handle has to be FULLY down and forward for that fireplace to work properly.
If this doesn't solve your issue, I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.
