Question
QUESTION: I am building a house in Mexico and don't have access to real experts.  I need 2 questions answered.
1. I have added a copper gasline into the back of the firebox. What do I need to buy to make it work as a gas starter? and how can I make sure it all stays safe?  Valves etc? Where can I buy these products?
2. I had the fireplace and chimney made from brick.  I am supposing I should line the brick inside the firebox with another layer of fire resistant brick? Special mortar? Can I just leave the rest of the chimney etc with just the brick?

ANSWER: Hello Nick, I would start with your local building department and see what they require, and replace the copper with "black pipe" and yes you should use fire brick and high temp mortar in the fire box.
you could also ask a local mason

QUESTION: Thanks.  Can you tell me what components I need to buy to use this as a gas starter?  Do I need to run electric to the fireplace also so I can use an electronic switch to start gas?
FYI - There is no building department!

Answer
Welcome back Nick, I would start with a good set of gas logs and they will tell you what you can use or can't use. some have a pilot light that stays lit year round others have a remote (like your TV)
When you find a set of logs and speak to the manufacturer they will tell you if you can use a "copper gas line" and if not what to use.
