Question
I currently have a wood burning stove on one side of my wall in the family room and a wood fireplace in the living room on the the other side of the wall.  Both are vented and sharing the same chimney. I would like to convert the living room fireplace to a gas fireplace.  Can I still vent through the same chimney as the current set up?

Providing I am understanding you correctly, you cannot vent any two appliances through the same flue. Now if the chimney structure has two flues, one for the fireplace and one for the stove, your good. But if the two share a flue, this has never been permitted in any building code and should be abandoned immediately. As for the conversion to gas, this requires a NFPA-211 inspection of the system anyway.
