Question
Hi,
My fireplace is about from 1965, the damper is located between the mantel and the opening. The handle now spins without resistence, I don't know what broke, worm gear? cotter pin? what do you think I need or suggest me to do??

This is an easy one. Contact a CSIA certified chimney sweep at www.csia.org. There is a search locator that will show sweeps within a 50 mile radius of your home. Even if the damper is not repairable a top damper can be installed. best of luck and thanks for asking.
