Chimney & Fireplaces/Chimney Construction

Question
I have two chimneys side by side.  One is for the furnace on the lower level of the house, and the other is for the fireplace on the level above the furnace.  I want to install a small wood stove in front of the fireplace using a flexable liner from the stove to the top of the chimney.  I noticed a cross connecting pipe between the two chimneys above the fireplace damper.  What is the purpose of the cross connection?  If I install the flex liner to a cap on the top of the chimney, I'll negate the purpose of the cross connect.  Is this a concern?

Answer
Hello Scott, not sure what you have if the 2 flues are connected then it is not right and both flues must be corrected. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
