Chimney & Fireplaces/chimney liner

Question
Hello, I had a chimney liner installed in my 1940's brick chimney in 2007.  I noticed a small leak when it rained heavily near the base of the chimney in the basement.  When I pulled out one of the hot water vent pipes (there are 2 hot water heaters and a hot air furnace vented into the chimney) I noticed that the vent pipes aren't teed into the liner, the liner just starts say 6 -8 inches above the area and is cemented in place.  When I had the company come back out they said it was "plated" and that this was fine.  I was suspecting trouble from these guys so I had another guy come out and look at it and he said not only was that absolutely the wrong way to do it but that it was illegal.  Can you comment on this?  And what if any, recourse do you think I have with this original company?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Answer
Mark,

The liner must have a positive connection to the appliance. If you can obtain the name of the manufacture of the liner system, this will be of great help as the liner companies technical department will give you the listing requirements. After you have your ducks in a row with this information, you can proceed with recourse. I would start with your own building department. Best of luck on this.
