Chimney & Fireplaces/same chimeny use

Question
I have a wood burning fireplace on 1st floor(ranch home) and would like to put a wood burning stove in the basement.  Can I use the same chimney?

Answer
Hello DJ, each solid fuel unit must have its own "flue" (air channels in the chimney) if you do not have a second un used flue in that chimney then no.
you can install a Class A chimney (stainless steel chimney) up the out side of the house and vent the wood stove into that.
check with your local building department and I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
