Chimney & Fireplaces/Conversion of Coal Burning Fireplace to Wood

Question
My wife and I are considering purchasing a house, but the fireplace is a coal burning fireplace, which is too shallow to burn wood. How can I convert it to a wood burning fireplace? Could I have a mason extend the back of the fireplace to enlarge the firebox? How much might that cost? The fireplace is built out of brick and the mortar is in perfect condition.

Answer
Hello James, you might be able to alter the fireplace and it could be expensive. You might be able to install a wood stove?
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
